About the Road Trip Cost Calculator

This tool estimates the total cost of a road trip from four components: fuel, tolls, accommodation and food. Fuel cost is worked out from your total distance and your vehicle's fuel consumption — entered either as litres per 100km or as miles per gallon — multiplied by the current fuel price. Accommodation is your nightly rate times the number of nights, and food is a daily-per-person estimate multiplied by the number of people and the number of days the trip takes, where trip days are estimated by assuming roughly 500km of driving per day plus any overnight stops.

Note that when you choose miles-per-gallon as your consumption unit, the tool converts using the imperial (UK) gallon of 4.546 litres. If your vehicle's MPG figure is quoted in US gallons (3.785 litres), switch to L/100km instead or convert your MPG figure first, or the fuel cost estimate will be off. The total does not include vehicle rental, insurance, parking or wear-and-tear costs — add those separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you enter consumption as L/100km, litres used = distance in km ÷ 100 × your consumption figure. If you enter MPG instead, the tool converts distance to miles, divides by your MPG, then converts gallons to litres using the imperial gallon (4.546L). Either way, litres used is then multiplied by your fuel price per litre.
Trip days is the number of driving days (distance divided by roughly 500km per day, rounded up) plus any overnight stops you've entered. For example, a 1,000km trip is estimated at about 2 driving days before adding nights.
No. It covers fuel, tolls, accommodation and food only. Rental fees, insurance, parking charges and general vehicle wear-and-tear aren't included and should be added to your total separately.
That's the imperial (UK) gallon, commonly used for MPG figures in the UK. If your vehicle's MPG rating uses the US gallon (3.785 litres) instead, either convert your MPG figure first or switch to the L/100km input to avoid an inaccurate fuel cost estimate.
