How Follower Growth Rate Is Calculated

The core growth rate is (Current Followers − Starting Followers) ÷ Starting Followers × 100 over your chosen period, which this calculator then normalizes to a monthly rate by scaling to a 30-day month (growth rate × 30 ÷ period days) so periods of different lengths are comparable. Daily growth rate is simply the period growth rate divided by the number of days in the period.

Net new followers is followers gained minus unfollows during the period, and followers per day is that net figure divided by days. Retention rate is (1 − Unfollows ÷ Gained) × 100 — the share of new followers who stuck around rather than unfollowing within the same window.

Projecting Your Target Date

Using your average net followers-per-day, the calculator projects days to reach your target milestone as (Target − Current) ÷ Followers per Day, then converts that into a calendar date. This projection assumes your recent growth pace holds steady, which rarely happens exactly in practice -- treat it as a rough trendline, not a guarantee.

Growth Verdict Bands

Monthly growth rate is rated: above 10% = Explosive, 5–10% = Fast Growing, 2–5% = Steady, 0–2% = Slow, and negative = Declining.

Frequently Asked Questions

The calculator first computes your growth rate over the exact period you entered -- (Current - Starting) / Starting x 100 -- then normalizes it to a standard 30-day month by scaling proportionally to your period's length. This lets you fairly compare growth measured over a 7-day week against growth measured over a 90-day quarter.
Retention rate is the share of new followers who did not unfollow within the same period, calculated as (1 - Unfollows / Gained) x 100. A high growth rate paired with low retention often signals low-quality follower acquisition (contests, follow-for-follow, bots) rather than genuine, engaged audience growth.
It's a straight-line projection based on your recent average followers-per-day pace, so it assumes that pace continues unchanged. Real growth is rarely linear -- a viral post can accelerate it sharply, while an algorithm change or posting gap can slow it -- so treat the projected date as a rough trendline to revisit periodically, not a fixed forecast.
This calculator rates monthly growth above 10% as Explosive, 5-10% as Fast Growing, 2-5% as Steady, 0-2% as Slow, and any negative rate as Declining. These bands are general reference points -- what counts as strong growth varies by platform, account size (smaller accounts can post much higher percentage growth), and niche.
