About the Tile Calculator
Buying the right number of tiles avoids both costly extra trips to the store and excess waste. This calculator divides your total room area by the area of a single tile, then applies a waste allowance for cuts, breakage, and pattern matching.
Choosing a Waste Allowance
For a simple straight-line layout in a rectangular room, 10% waste is typically sufficient. For diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or rooms with many corners and fixtures to cut around, increase the allowance to 15-20%.
Buying by the Box
Tiles are usually sold in boxes covering a fixed area or tile count. This calculator also converts your total tile count into the number of boxes to purchase, rounding up to ensure full coverage.
