About Carbon Footprint Calculator

A personal carbon footprint is total annual CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions from your activities. World average: approximately 4.7 tonnes CO2-equivalent per person per year. India average: about 1.9 tonnes. The Paris Agreement target requires bringing individual footprints below 2 tonnes by 2050. Emission factors used: grid electricity in India approximately 0.71 kg CO2 per kWh; petrol 2.31 kg CO2 per litre; beef approximately 27 kg CO2 per kg.

Highest-impact personal actions: switch to EV or public transport (transport is 20-30% of footprint); adopt a plant-rich diet (food is 20-30% of footprint); install rooftop solar (home energy is 15-25% of footprint); avoid long-haul flights (one return long-haul flight generates 1.5-3 tonnes CO2-equivalent). Carbon offsets are a last resort - direct emissions reduction is always preferable to offsetting unavoidable emissions.

Formula Used In This Calculator

Transport = Car km × 0.17 kg CO₂/km ÷ 1000; Aviation = Flight hours × 0.204 t CO₂/hour (ICAO-style estimate); Home Energy = (Electricity kWh/month × 12 × 0.436 kg CO₂/kWh ÷ 1000) + (Gas m³/month × 12 × 2.2 kg CO₂/m³ ÷ 1000); Diet is taken directly from your selected diet type (1.5–3.3 t CO₂/year); Shopping = Items/year × 0.02 t CO₂. All components are summed to your total annual footprint, then compared against a 4-tonne world average reference and converted into trees needed to offset (total ÷ 22 kg CO₂ per tree per year).

Trees needed is calculated as your total footprint in kilograms divided by 22 kg CO2 absorbed per tree per year, a commonly used average absorption rate. Note that a newly planted tree takes decades to reach that absorption rate, so tree planting is best treated as a long-term supplement to reducing emissions directly, not an instant offset.
