How Travel Insurance Premiums Are Estimated

Travel insurance premiums are driven mainly by destination risk zone and trip duration, since these determine how expensive a medical claim abroad is likely to be. This calculator uses per-traveller, per-day base rates that scale up with destination — Domestic (₹25/day), Asia (₹60/day), Europe/UK/Australia (₹120/day) and USA/Canada (₹200/day) — then applies a plan multiplier: Basic (0.75×), Standard (1×) or Premium (1.5×). The total is rounded to the nearest ₹10.

Formula: Premium = Base Rate × Days × Travellers × Plan Multiplier. Medical coverage limits are also destination-linked: ₹5L for domestic trips, ₹30L for Asia, ₹50L for Europe, and ₹1Cr for USA/Canada, reflecting the far higher cost of hospital treatment in North America and Western Europe.

Worked Example

For 2 travellers on a 7-day trip to Europe with a Standard plan: base rate ₹120 × 7 days × 2 travellers × 1 (standard multiplier) = ₹1,680 total premium (₹840 per person), with medical coverage of ₹50,00,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

A standard plan covers medical emergencies abroad, trip cancellation, lost or delayed baggage, flight delays and personal accident cover. Premium plans extend this to adventure sports and higher medical limits. Always check the policy wording for exclusions like pre-existing conditions or extreme sports before relying on a basic plan.
Premiums scale with the destination's healthcare costs. A single hospital admission in the USA or Europe can run into tens of thousands of dollars, so insurers set higher base rates and higher medical coverage limits (up to ₹1 crore for the USA/Canada) for those zones compared to Asia or domestic travel.
Basic (0.75× the standard rate) suits short, low-risk domestic trips with minimal baggage or activity risk. Standard covers most leisure travellers well. Premium (1.5×) is worth the extra cost if you're doing adventure sports, travelling for an extended period, or want the highest medical and baggage limits.
It's optional but still useful — domestic plans are inexpensive (from around ₹25/traveller/day) and cover trip cancellation, baggage loss and accidental medical costs that your regular health insurance may not fully address while travelling, especially to remote destinations with limited hospital networks.
