How Stamp Duty Is Calculated
Stamp duty is a state-level tax on property transactions, typically 4-8% of the property's agreement value, varying by state, property type (residential vs commercial), and sometimes buyer gender — many states offer a 1-2% concession for female buyers to encourage property ownership among women. Registration charges (usually ~1% of value, often capped) are added on top.
Worked Example
A ₹50,00,000 residential property in Karnataka, purchased by a male buyer: stamp duty at 5.6% = ₹2,80,000, plus registration charges of ₹50,000, for a total registration cost of ₹3,30,000 — money to budget for on top of the property price and any loan down payment.
