Adding vs Removing Sales Tax
Adding tax to a base amount is simple multiplication: Total = Base × (1 + rate/100). Removing tax from a tax-inclusive amount requires division, not subtraction: Base = Inclusive Amount ÷ (1 + rate/100) — a step people frequently get wrong by incorrectly subtracting the percentage directly from the inclusive total.
Worked Example
A base amount of ₹50,000 at an 18% tax rate: Tax Amount = ₹9,000, Total (incl. tax) = ₹59,000. This works identically for GST, VAT, or any other percentage-based sales tax — just enter your applicable rate.
