What a Privacy Policy Must Cover
A privacy policy is a legal disclosure explaining what personal data your website or app collects, why, and how it's used, stored, and shared. Under GDPR (EU/UK) and similar laws elsewhere, this disclosure is not optional if you collect any personal data -- including through cookies, analytics, or contact forms. Core elements: what data is collected (name, email, cookies, payment info, analytics), the legal basis and purpose for collecting it, how long it's retained, who it might be shared with (like Google Analytics or payment processors), and how users can exercise their rights (access, deletion, opt-out).
If you use Google Analytics or Google AdSense, your privacy policy must specifically disclose their use of cookies and provide an opt-out mechanism -- this is both a legal requirement in many jurisdictions and an AdSense program policy requirement. Keep your policy in plain, accessible language; overly dense legal jargon undermines the transparency the policy is supposed to provide, and some regulators explicitly penalize policies that are needlessly hard to understand.
