What a Valid GST Tax Invoice Requires
A valid GST tax invoice must contain: supplier GSTIN and legal name; recipient GSTIN (for B2B) or name and address (for B2C transactions above ₹2.5 lakh); a unique invoice number sequential within a financial year; invoice date; HSN or SAC code for each line item; taxable value; the applicable GST rate and amount (CGST + SGST for intra-state supply, IGST for inter-state supply); place of supply; and the total invoice value in both words and figures.
E-invoicing mandate: businesses above the applicable annual aggregate turnover threshold must generate an IRN (Invoice Reference Number) and QR code through the IRP (Invoice Registration Portal) for B2B transactions -- done via the GST portal or ERP integration; check the current threshold, as it has been lowered progressively over time. For B2C transactions, a simplified tax invoice without recipient GSTIN is acceptable. Composition scheme taxpayers cannot issue tax invoices -- they issue a Bill of Supply instead. Invoice amendment rules generally allow corrections only before filing the relevant GSTR-1 return or by a fixed annual cutoff, whichever is earlier -- always confirm current rules with your accountant.
