How GST Calculations Work
India's GST has four main slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, depending on the goods or service category. Adding GST: Final Price = Base Price × (1 + GST%/100). Removing GST from an inclusive price: Base Price = Inclusive Price ÷ (1 + GST%/100) — this second calculation is where most people make mistakes, since you can't just subtract the percentage directly from the inclusive price.
Worked Example
A base price of ₹10,000 at 18% GST (the most common slab, covering most goods and services): GST amount = ₹1,800, final price = ₹11,800. Conversely, if ₹11,800 is already GST-inclusive, the base price is ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000, not ₹11,800 − 18% = ₹9,676 as a naive calculation would give.
