How Your Weighted Grade Is Calculated
Most courses don't weight every assignment equally -- a final exam might count for 50% of your grade while a single homework counts for 2%. This calculator computes your true final grade using: Final Grade = Sum(Score x Weight) / Sum(Weight), so it correctly reflects each component's actual importance rather than treating every score the same. The "Total Weight Used" row flags if your weights don't add up to 100%, which usually means a component is missing or a weight was entered incorrectly.
This is especially useful mid-semester: enter your known scores so far (with their real weights) to see your current standing, then experiment with hypothetical scores on remaining components to figure out what you need on the final exam to hit a target grade -- a much more accurate planning tool than simply averaging your raw scores.
Worked Example
Three components: Assignment (85%, weighted 20%), Midterm Exam (70%, weighted 30%), Final Exam (80%, weighted 50%). Total weight = 100%, weighted sum = (85x20) + (70x30) + (80x50) = 7,800, final grade = 7,800 / 100 = 78.00% -- a B+ letter grade and a passing result.
