About the Daily Calorie Counter

This tool estimates total calories and macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fat) from a list of foods you enter, using per-100g reference values for 11 common food categories (egg/dairy, chicken/meat, fish/seafood, rice/grains, bread/pasta, vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts/seeds, oil/butter, and sugar/sweets). For each food you add its weight in grams and select the closest category; the calculator scales that category's per-100g calorie and macro values to your entered weight and sums the results across all foods in your list.

Macronutrient percentages shown are calorie-based, not weight-based: protein and carbohydrate each provide about 4 kcal per gram, while fat provides about 9 kcal per gram, so a food with more fat by weight can still represent a large share of total calories even at a lower gram amount. This is a quick estimation tool using generic category averages rather than a specific product's verified nutrition label -- for individual packaged foods, always check the label or a comprehensive food database for exact values.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each food category (e.g. Chicken/Meat, Rice/Grains) has a fixed calorie and macro value per 100g. The tool scales that value to the weight you enter for each food item (weight in grams / 100), then sums the results across every item in your list.
The percentage breakdown is calorie-based, not weight-based. Protein and carbohydrate provide about 4 kcal per gram while fat provides about 9 kcal per gram, so fat contributes proportionally more calories per gram than the same weight of protein or carbs.
Yes, select "Custom" as the category, which uses a generic placeholder value (100 kcal, 5g protein, 15g carbs, 3g fat per 100g). For more accurate results on a specific item, use the closest matching category or check the item's own nutrition label.
It's the raw intake side of that equation. Pair it with our BMR Meal Planner to see your estimated daily calorie target based on your goal, then use this counter to check your actual intake against that target.
