How CGPA Is Calculated

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) combines every completed semester into one overall figure, weighted by each semester's credit load: CGPA = Sum(Semester Credits x SGPA) / Sum(Semester Credits). Most Indian universities use a 10-point scale and convert CGPA to percentage as Percentage = CGPA x 9.5 (the common Anna University formula, though some institutions use x10 -- always confirm your university's official conversion factor before quoting a percentage on official documents).

CGPA is a critical screening criterion for graduate school (MS/MBA) applications and many employers' minimum-eligibility cutoffs, typically stated as 6.5+ or 7.0+ on the 10-point scale, or roughly 3.2+ on the 4.0 scale for competitive graduate admissions. Use this calculator each semester to track your trajectory, or to project what SGPA you'd need in upcoming semesters to hit a target CGPA.

Worked Example

Three semesters: Semester 1 (24 credits, 8.2 SGPA), Semester 2 (26 credits, 7.8 SGPA), Semester 3 (24 credits, 8.5 SGPA). Total credits = 74, weighted total = (24x8.2) + (26x7.8) + (24x8.5) = 603.6, CGPA = 603.6 / 74 = 8.16 -- on the 10-point scale (Anna University formula), that converts to roughly 69.6%.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no single global standard -- some universities officially use CGPA x 9.5 to convert to percentage, others use x10, and a few use entirely different formulas tied to their own grading rubric. Always use your specific university's officially published conversion factor for anything submitted on official transcripts or applications; this calculator's percentage is a common-convention estimate, not a substitute for your registrar's figure.
Competitive programs (top MS/MBA programs) generally look for CGPA above 8.0 on a 10-point scale (or above 3.2-3.5 on a 4.0 scale), though specific thresholds vary widely by program prestige, country, and field. Many employers and universities also set minimum-eligibility cutoffs around 6.5-7.0 (10-point) purely for shortlisting, separate from what's considered competitive.
Enter each semester's already-calculated SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average), not individual subject grades -- if you don't know a semester's SGPA yet, calculate it first using the GPA Calculator (which works at the subject level), then bring that resulting SGPA figure into this CGPA calculator for that semester.
